WE ARE THE GILA GUARDIANS
We, the Gila Guardians, are advocating for the protection of the environment of the Gila region, and more specifically for Mogollon, New Mexico. The Gila Guardians consists of residents of Mogollon and nearby neighbors and friends who support our effort to stop Silver47 Exploration Corp. (formally Summa Silver) from further exploratory mining in Mogollon.
Mogollon is once again a target in the crosshairs of extractive industry. The search for gold and silver is nothing new to this small mountain town. Time and time again, the lure of profit brings mining companies from the US and Canada who are looking to get rich and get out, leaving the clean-up for someone else…we, the Gila Guardians.

Environmental Laws
There are environmental laws designed to protect fragile ecosystems. Some of these apply to the area surrounding Mogollon and to the activities ofSilver47. Some of these laws exempt the mining industry and others are not applicable due to Summa’s “minimal impact” permit issued by the Minerals and Mining Division of New Mexico’s Energy, Mining and Natural Resources Department. The GilaGuardians have concerns regarding this “Minimal Impact” permit and its applicability to Summa’s operations. We continue to question the Minerals and Mining Division, however, as you might expect, they tend to interpret many things in the favor of industry, and have lesser regard for our ecosystems.
There are also laws designed to ensure public safety. The rules governing the use of NM Highway 159, as well as smaller roads, are being “bent” to the advantage of Summa, at least in our opinion. We continue to work with the NM Dept. of Transportation and the Department of Public Safety to ensure the rules are enforced in a pragmatic way which ensures the safety of the citizens of and visitors to Mogollon and beyond (highway 159 is a main artery to access the Gila Wilderness area by hikers, hunters, and other outdoor enthusiasts).
You can find more information on the Energy, Mining, and Natural Resources web page here: https://www.emnrd.nm.gov/
Search for “Minimal Impact Permits to find Summa’s permit.
